In recent years, Slovenian media have revealed several scandals, the cause of which was plagiarism. Among those who transcribed their diploma thesis, without properly quoting the sources from which they were drawn, were members of parliament, ministers, directors, civil servants, university employees, and many others discovered by academic institutions themselves . Plagiarism does not occur only in academic circles, but it is also widespread in the economy, in the public administration and in other areas. The purpose of the discussion is to present what plagiarism is, how to prevent it, and how programs for detecting similar content work. On examples of transcribed texts, we will show how a program for detection of similar contents is used. Software which is used by Slovenian educational institutions was developed in the Laboratory for Heterogeneous Computer Systems at the Institute of Computer Science, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.
